Hello Friends! It’s starting to get cold here in Chicago, I can feel a snow storm coming soon. I can’t believe I just said that! Colder temps means I’m switching out my summer clutch for my winter clutch. Today I’m sharing how to wear a clutch as a purse.
I’ve always loved clutches. I have a small collection that I truly treasure. From tweeds to leather I have one for every occasion. The clutch for me is sophisticated, a step above a regular purse. It takes any outfit up a notch and it the ultimate cocktail, black tie or wedding accessory.
And I know that the current trend are tiny purses on chain links like my favorite Rebecca Minkoff Bag, however, my heart belongs to the clutch. It’s the ultimate chic piece for any outfit. While I love carrying a clutch to a fancy event I also like carrying one with jeans and a tee shirt. I love the clutch, but sometimes I change my mind while out and hate carrying it all night.
I’ve got the perfect solution now. You can turn a clutch into a purse that is wearable in minutes. It’s so easy!
What You Need
To turn a clutch into a purse you need two things; a clutch with a flap or hard closure and a scarf.
The best clutch is one that has a flap with a closure like a button or magnet. You can also use a hard cased clutch that snaps shut. Think of something with a hinge, that can close tightly. You want to be able to secure the scarf onto the clutch itself.
Some options for clutches like this can be found here:
In terms of scarves, you are going to want to use a square square or a rectangular scarf. My preference is a square scarf. I have several as I wear them around my neck as an accessory. I love when items can play double duty.
The scarf should be made of lightweight fabric. You want the scarf to be easily folded and not bulky. You can’t do this with a pashmina or a wool scarf.

How To Convert Your Clutch
If you want to go completely hands free with your clutch you need to make a strap for it. Simply take scarf on the longest end and roll (or fold) it into a strap. For a square scarf fold it into a triangle, on the longest side start to roll or fold the scarf to the smaller side.
Starting from this side adds dimension and texture to the scarf. You will be able to see the layers forming on the scarf. This thin piece of fabric now acts as your strap for the clutch. There are two ways to use and tie the scarf on the clutch.
Two Ways To Wear
Belt Bag
For a belt bag look you will want to open the flap of the clutch and place the strap in the center of it. Close the flap so the strap is secure and tie it around your waste. You can play around with he strap by tying it in the font or back, in a knot or a bow. The options are endless.
Once it is secured on your body you are ready to go. Just keep in mind that when you go into the clutch it might not stay super secure. Be gentle and make sure nothing falls out.
Shoulder Bag
For a traditional shoulder bag you will secure the strap in the same manner. By placing the strap in the middle of the open flap on the clutch and securing the flap. Where you tie the knot is up to you. I prefer to tie a knot to it sits on my shoulder.
In addition to wearing the purse on one shoulder you can wear it across your body. Be super careful when going into the purse though. The strap is not secure and once you open it, it can fall off the strap.
