Fashion Details:
There is something about shopping during the holidays that makes me so excited. I love seeing the clothes and holiday patterns. The festive patterns get me excited, from the stripes to the plaid and prints! It’s a very similar excitement to putting up my Christmas decorations. The anticipation, fun and enjoyment of holiday décor is what the holiday is all about.
However, there is nothing I hate more then buying something and only wearing it a couple of times. I want to get the most for my money and wearing something once or twice seems like a waste. This especially holds true during the holidays.
I love the festive patterns and styles during the season, however there are only so many plaid shirts one can own. And I own several, so I know. I have two plaid tops and I only wear them from December 1 – December 25, after that, they live in the back of the closet. I love them, but it’s a total waste of money.
That’s why this year I’m focusing on festive patterns that can be worn during the holiday and after. Yes, clothes that last longer then 25 days. It’s truly so exciting. The challenge I have is that clothes in the store around the holiday’s have a holiday feel to them. This feeling makes we want to never wear them after the holidays, until now.
Festive Prints
A holiday print doesn’t have to be red, green or plaid, it just has to have a festive feeling. A festive feel is a pattern that excites you, a pattern that warms your heart, and a pattern that is slightly glamorous. Take sequins for example. They are always linked to New Years Eve. Why? Because they are a little extra and bring in a sense of excitement. But you can wear sequins all year long.
This year my festive prints include;
All of these prints can be worn year round and don’t have a specific tie to the holidays. But they offer that fun holiday vibe that I’m searching for. Keep reading to see how I’m styling each festive print during the holidays and after.
Stripped Turtleneck
During my 12 years working at the Gap, the holidays meant stripes. The Gap was famous for their crazy striped patterns. From sweaters to scarfs the crazy stripe pattern means it’s the holidays. J. Crew got in on the trend a few years back and I love it. The fun colors bring in the excitement of the holidays and offer a pop of color the rest of the year.
Stripes are easy to incorporate after the holidays. You can easily slip it into your daily rotation with no one knowing it was a holiday item. The bright colors contrast the grey winter days. My go to look for stripes is:
Stripped Turtleneck + Black Denim + ReKnit Booties
Navy and White
Having an abundance of the same color family with statement pieces is the ideal holiday outfit. Navy and white are classic colors that you can ring in the holidays with and also wear year round. Anything in a turtleneck is ideal during the winter months since it keeps you warm! To dress this look up for the holidays I’ve added a statement necklace and my going out blazer.
When the holidays are over, I’m going to drop the necklace and blazer. I can wear the turtleneck casually around town and also on casual Friday at work. I love the polished look that navy offers, its super chic! My ideal navy look is:
Navy Spotted Turtleneck + Blazer + Dark Denim + ReKnit Booties
Buffalo Plaid
While buffalo plaid reminds me of the late 90’s (yes I’m dating myself), it also reminds me that the classics stay around. Buffalo plaid is still going strong and a great pattern to wear now and later for the holidays. It’s not your traditional steward plaid, but it is festive. I love to layer it with a vest or a little jacket after the holidays so it doesn’t scream plaid!! I’ve loving this look with buffalo plaid:
Buffalo Plaid + Black Denim + Black Bootie
