It’s blazer season and I’m pumped about it! I’ve been collecting blazers for years now and I say collecting because they last for years and rarely go out of style. A blazer is the essential third piece to any outfit. It’s called the third piece because your outfit is typically made up of three parts; a top, a bottom and a blazer aka the third piece.
The third piece takes any regular outfit and jazzes it up, it can instantly change an outfit and take you from one event to the next. Blazers are usually a bit pricey, sometimes around $250 and above. However, there is a reason they are pricey. It is because they are well constructed, tailored and last for a long time. In addition, if you buy a classic timeless blazer it can last you for years.
My go to for blazers is J.Crew. Partly because they have classic styles that they have released year after year and partly because they know how to make a great blazer. They take classic styles and use their modern technology with on-trend fabrics to create masterpieces. I own 5 J.Crew blazers and have had them a long time. They truly stand the test of time and hold up well. I try to space out the purchase and do it over different seasons or years instead of buying them all at once.
I invest in the classic styles and colors that I know will be around for years. While I do love a trendy blazer I typically don’t spend a lot on them because I know they won’t be in style forever. My latest purchase is the Sommerset Blazer in herringbone and she is a beauty.
Sommerset Blazer
The blazer itself is a classic, relaxed, menswear-inspired blazer. It’s not oversized, but rather the sizing is generous. I took my normal size, an 8 and enjoy the fit. If you are between sizes, I would suggest going with the smaller size. The material is thicker so this is definitely a fall or winter blazer, as it would be too heavy to wear in the spring. Plus the herringbone pattern is more of a fall/winter pattern anyways.
The length of this blazer is also a little longer, which I enjoy. I’m 5’9 and the blazer hits below my hips. I can rarely find a blazer that long. With a longer blazer you have more options for wearing and it looks more relaxed than a short blazer. Of course having it be longer also opens up your options for styling.
Style The Sommerset Blazer Four Ways
Styling versatility is what makes a good blazer a great blazer. Additionally, the more options you have the better the cost per wear is going to be for the piece. Meaning paying $250 or more for a blazer will make more sense for your wallet and mindset. And today I’m going to show you how to style this blazer four ways; work, casual Friday, weekend, and date night.
