How To Style Velvet Leggings

With less than a week before Christmas, I’m still running around, finishing up some shopping, gift wrapping and last-minute cookie baking.  Christmas is a little different this year for a few  reasons.

  • It’s our last Christmas as the two of us, next year there will be three!
  • We will be celebrating our first Christmas in our new condo, however we will be in Ohio on the actual holiday and will celebrate when we get back in town.
  • It’s the first time in a long time we are driving back to Ohio.  I’m bumping up on the no fly time period with my pregnancy and we opted to drive.  Driving over 45 minutes anywhere kills me so I’m mentally preparing for the 6-hour drive!

When we are back in town we are going to celebrate by opening gifts and getting fancy for dinner at one of our favorite spots, Mon Ami Gabi in Lincoln Park. They have one of the best steak frites in town and decorate the place perfectly at Christmas. I’ll be sporting my velvet leggings for dinner and I can’t wait!

My velvet leggings have been a staple this holiday season.  I actually only got them because I found a great maternity pair, however I can’t believe I haven’t owned a pair before.   They are incredibly versatile and can be worn for daytime and nighttime. I’ve even wore them to work! While mine are maternity, some great non maternity pairs can be found here, here, here and here.

Today I’m going to show you three different ways to style velvet leggings for the holidays and after.  You can wear velvet leggings all winter long, not just around the holidays. So grab a pair and style them up!  They make a perfect look for New Year’s Eve and Valentine’s Day too!

Three Ways to Style Velvet Leggings

Look #1 – Casual Sweater

Anytime you wear velvet leggings you will be dressed up.  It comes with the lux, buttery fabric, but to take it down a notch you can pair it with a longer tunic sweater.  Tunic sweaters are great for covering up in leggings. It helps smooth out the hips and rear end and gives you more confidence to rock leggings.

For shoes go with something fun like leopard heels.   Leopard heels never go out of style. While mine are old, some similar options a can be found here in a heel here in a flat and here in a loafer.  You can also find a leopard shoe in any style your heart desires.

Look #2 – Fun with Fur

Faux fur vest for the win!  I wait all year for it to get cold out so I can break out the faux fur vest.  You can wear it as early a October and it lasts through February. It’s the perfect accessory to keep you warm all winter long.

Faux fur vests come in plenty of colors, but I like the more natural looking ones in brown tones. I’m currently wearing an older version of this Banana Republic one, but am waiting for this beauty to arrive in the mail.  This one is a little thinner and less puffy than the one I currently own.

I love to pair my vest with a white blouse or a cream blouse.  No special reason why other than I love the way it looks.  It’s soft and looks very dressed up without trying very hard.  Add a pair of nude heels and you’ve got the perfect soft winter look.

Look #3 – Black and Plaid

Wearing all black is one of my favorite looks.  Its super easy to achieve because my closet is full of black items.  Black also makes me look and feel sleek and chic. It’s a bit cliche, but you can never go wrong in all black.

Another staple in my closet is a black turtleneck, I may have close to 5 of them.  I’ve literally worn holes in this Gap one (maternity option and non-maternity option) and have a spare on hand! I reach for it to keep warm, to look put together and love the classic style.

To break up the all black look add a pop of color with a scarf.  To keep in the festive mood grab a plaid scarf and wear it. When wearing a scarf as part of my outfit I let it lay long and flat around my neck.  If I’m putting on a coat I’ll wrap it around my neck to keep warm.
