I worked in retail for 12 years, it was one of my most favorite jobs. It was at the Gap and I LOVED every second of it. One thing that always sparked my interest was the timing of seasonal clothing. “Spring 1” lines hit the store in late January and “Spring 2” lines followed in early March. It never made any sense because it’s still very cold and very much winter even in March. Don’t let retail stores fool you this time of year. It’s still winter and sweaters are still staples. That’s why I added a new sweater to my wardrobe that I’m so excited about, the Fisherman Sweater.
What Is a Fisherman Sweater
It originated in the Aran Islands off the coast of Ireland and was designed to keep people warm. The distinguishing factor of the fisherman sweater is the complex texture stitch pattern. Think of cable knit, but a little more intense. Fisherman sweaters are most authentic in neutral tones like cream
Somers Sweater By MM LaFleur
My favorite workwear brand just released the Somers Sweater which is their take on the Fisherman Sweater. It’s a cozy wool/alpaca blend which makes it warm for cold winter days.
It’s a boxy fit. Not an overly boxy fit, but a nice boxy fit. You all know what I’m talking about! It still is a feminine sweater with a lovely soft crewneck neckline. The sleeves aren’t tailored either, which allow them to be loose and have a wide wrist opening. The true standout on this sweater is the intricate cable knit pattern running down the front. It is rich and lux! The only downfall of the sweater is that it is dry clean only. However, the majority of my sweaters are dry clean only which seems to be standard for sweaters.
In terms of sizing, stick with your true size on this sweater. I went with a a medium and it’s perfect. If I went smaller it would actually look too small even though its a boxy fit.

How To Style a Fisherman Sweater
What I love about the Fisherman Sweater is the versatility of the sweater. While it is a slightly masculine sweater there are several ways to style it in a more feminine light. I also found a few ways to make it office appropriate! Being able to wear a piece of clothing for all facets of life is so exciting! Wear it to the office, wear it on the weekend or wear it out at night, you can literally wear it anywhere. It’s a true wardrobe workhorse!
