OMG Lizzie turned one! I can’t believe that a year went by that fast. I will be the first person to roll their eyes at the statement “time goes by so fast.” And I’ll be the first person to say it’s so true and I should have never rolled my eyes!
Perspectives on time seem to change the older you get and once you have kids. And it just so happens that I am older and just had a kid so it’s really out of control. I do know that I truly value every minute that I have and enjoy it to the fullest. If you don’t it will be over before you know it and you will have missed out.
And not missing out includes having a first birthday party. I’m not a huge party person, in fact, I’d choose to skip the party 9 times out of 10. However, your baby only turns one once. So, I had to throw Lizzie a proper first birthday. We kept it small and only had family at the party. And first birthday party ideas can become so stressful to decide on.
First Birthday Party Ideas that are Simple
First Birthday’s Are For The Baby
The internet has been disappointing me lately. I feel like everything I find on there is the exact opposite of what I think. I’m setting the record straight though in my post about the First Year of Parenting. And I’m setting it straight here too…. First Birthday Parties are not to celebrate the parents making it through the first year of parenting. They are to celebrate the baby turning one!
I’ve heard it and read it everywhere and I don’t buy this for one second, sorry. First birthday parties are for the baby. It’s a time to reflect on how much the baby has grown and all the milestones they have hit. It’s also a chance for everyone to spoil the baby with hugs, kisses and smiles! Sorry parents, it’s the babies time to shine!
Party Theme
Now with all the first birthday party ideas out there, how does one pick a theme to celebrate the baby? Pinterest 😉 No! In my mind my theme was going to be simple, literally. So I went with pink and gold. In all seriousness, I didn’t want to get too carried away with a theme, but I wanted a cohesive look of the décor and even Lizzie’s outfit. I found the cutest pink jeans for her and the inspiration for the party was born.
Decorations
Check out how I created a simple pink and gold theme with a few homemade surprises mixed in. I’ve linked all the resources for you guys too.
Table Wear
Gold tablecloth, napkins and silverware all from Target
Banner
I picked up this banner on Etsy and it’s the sweetest. The delicate paper flowers are so cute. It’s a great away to display monthly photos of your baby to see how she has grown and changed. In looking at Lizzie’s you can see that she completely changed from baby to big baby around 7 months.
Highchair Sign
Same Etsy shop as the banner, she has the best stuff. I taped this sign to the highchair
Cake Sign
Simple script ONE from Etsy (not the same shop as above).
Flowers
Tissue paper flowers are my jam! They remind me of crepe-paper flowers from my childhood. I would decorate my bike with them for a block party. I love how easy they are to make. I’m sharing a tutorial in my Insta-Stories today.
Lizzie’s Outfit
Every girl needs pink jeans! The gold one top and gold shoes from Freshly Picked rounded out the outfit. I also put her in the headband I took all her monthly pictures in.
Smash Cake
I found a picture of what I wanted on Pinterest and that’s how the cake came about. Chicago gals I got the cake at Mariano’s for $15, a total deal!
We had the best day celebrating Lizzie and all of her milestones. She had the best time crawling around and didn’t get very messy eating her cake. In fact she pushed it away a few times. I hope you enjoyed my rundown of first birthday party ideas!
Happy Birthday Lizzie!
