Thank you First Alert for sponsoring this post.
It’s a new year and we are starting it off with a lot of home projects. Some I do every year and some are special to this year. The biggest project in my home right now is creating Lizzie, a big girl room. We have baby arriving in the spring! Which means Lizzie is getting a big girl room. While decorating a room is fun I’m also focused on safety. We are creating a new room that involves a little construction and also ensuring that room is safe for fire prevention and carbon monoxide detection.
The room is currently an ensuite with a bathroom and storage closet attached to it. I’m going to separate the bathroom and storage closet and create a defined bedroom. Given that I’m deconverting the room I need to install a brand new smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector in the new room. I want something that is known to be safe and something that will last for a while. That is why I’ve chosen the First Alert 10-Year Sealed Battery Smoke & CO Alarm (find it here) for this bedroom and I’m very happy with my decision.

And while I’m installing a brand new alarm in her new room I’m also checking and replacing the other alarms in my home. Did you know that alarms don’t last forever? Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms should be replaced at least every ten years. But the maintenance doesn’t stop there, you need to replace the batteries every 6 months. Prior to using the First Alert 10-Year Sealed Battery Smoke & CO Alarm I would replace the batteries in March and November when we change the clocks to ensure they are functioning.
When changing the batteries also check the manufacturer date. The manufacturing date is printed on the back of your alarm. If it’s 10 years old or older it’s time to replace it. I suggest upgrading to the First Alert 10-Year Sealed Battery Smoke & CO Alarms. It offers 10 years of protection and eliminates the need for battery replacements and late-night, low battery chirps, that drive me up the wall! I can now rest easy knowing that each room in my home is protected with the most current smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
Safety Tips
Installing this new alarm in Lizzie’s new room also provides me a great opportunity to talk about fire safety with Lizzie. It’s never too early to discuss safety with your child. Lizzie is 3 so my tips are gears towards that age range. These are some of the safety tips I’m sharing with Lizzie.
- If the alarm goes off find mom and dad right away
- Know how to exit each room safely in case of fire (we show her exactly how to do it)
- Have a meeting place outside in case we get separated
- If you can’t find mom and dad, find a neighbor or the doorman (we live in a condo)
- Keep your eyes peeled for a fireman or police officer in case of an emergency
Protecting my family is a top priority and I’m glad to have First Alert help me do it!
