The end of the year is always a time to reflect on what you did, what you spent and how you will change things in the new year. For me it’s always the time of year where I set my annual budget and take a deep dive into my financials, including my credit score. I’ve always been a fanatic about my credit score. If I had to name the top three priorities in my life it would be my family, my health and my credit score (aka FICO® Score).
Yes, my FICO® Score is a priority, it is basically my financial health, which is the key to a lot of things in life. A FICO® Score is calculated by Fair Isaac Corporation, who pioneered the credit scoring system using a proprietary algorithm that compiles your credit files across the three main credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian and TransUnion) to calculate your lending risk. The higher the score, the less of a risk you are to lenders and the more willing they are to offer you desirable rates. This one score will determine the rate you receive for a mortgage, a car loan or any other type of loan you may need. It sets the stage for many important life milestones and having it in tip-top shape should be a priority.

Tips For Building Your Credit Score
Building a good credit score is a marathon, not a sprint. It takes years and dedication to achieve a high credit score that you can be proud of. My credit score journey started when I applied for my first credit card. It was an exciting time and a time to learn about having good credit. My parents had one rule for using the credit card. I could only use it if I had the money at home to pay it off immediately.
That one rule set the stage for my credit journey and I can proudly say I have achieved an excellent score as an adult and maintained it for several years. Over the years I’ve added a few rules to my parents’ to build a good credit score.
Here are my tips for building a good credit score.
- Only use your credit card if you have money to pay it off on time.
- Pay your bills on time. Always pay your bills on time, this includes all credit cards as well as utilities and other loans. Everything you pay for is tied to your credit score.
- Never hit your credit limit. Never max out your credit cards. If you have $10K to spend on a credit card only use up half of it at any given time.
- Spend only what you can afford. You can use your credit card for everyday purchases. But never live beyond your means. It’s ok to make a big purchase on your credit card as long as you can pay it off in the next billing cycle.
- Build a credit history. It is ok to have a credit line open for years and not use it often. Being a loyal customer gets you ahead when it comes to your credit score.
While the above tips are great, sometimes life happens and they can’t be followed or you simply forget. It’s ok because there are services that can help you still achieve a great credit score. These services are provided by a credit repair company.
