One of my favorite Midwest activities is apple picking. I’ve been going since I was a kid, however, in recent years it’s become more of an Instagram activity versus a fun family activity, which makes me a little sad. Either way we went apple picking this year and absolutely loved it. We headed to a new orchard this year in Hobart, Indiana, called County Line Orchard and we were impressed.
The orchard is HUGE, actually they have several orchards with 10 varieties of apples. Depending on when you go will drive what types of apples you can pick. We went early in the season and it just so happened to be a 90 degree day, we can really pick good days! My suggestion is to not go when it is this hot because sweating profusely while picking apples isn’t as fun as not sweating while picking apples.
County Line Orchard
While the main reason for going to County Line Orchard is the apples, there are plenty of other things to do while there. But lets talk about apple picking first. This orchard charges by the pound and they give you a huge bag to fill up too. So it’s a bit deceiving. We ended up with about 30 pounds of apples. Oops!
We also spent a good amount of time in the store, it’s large and has a lot of good things. Of course we under committed to donuts, a dozen apple cider and pumpkin donuts are simply not enough. We did pick up an apple pie which was delicious, so don’t pass that up.
After apple picking we spent time at the rest of the orchard looking around. They have a grill where you can grab lunch and listen to a live band. It’s great for the kiddos as all of them were dancing around! Be sure to leave enough time for the Moo-Choo and petting zoo. The grounds also offer plenty of photo ops for parents. With tractors, mini animals and head cut out structures all around.
Chicagoland Apple Picking
There are plenty of places for Chicagoland apple picking. Many within an hour to hour-and-a-half of downtown Chicago. My only tip is to watch the weather and go when it’s cool out. Here are some other popular Chicagoland apple orchards.
Checkout the beautiful grounds at Countyline Orchard and trust me the apples are delicious!
