Birkenstock Sandals – Why You Need A Pair

I bought my first pair of Birkenstock sandals in 2014, right around the time their second life came about.  Their first life started in the early 90’s when I was too cool for the “hippie” sandal.  In 2014 I saw my friend, who has great taste, had a pair and I thought “wow these must be the shoes for me.”  So naturally I was influenced to get a pair and it was love at first wear.

So let’s take a quick history lesson.  The very first pair of Birkenstocks were released in 1960’s and actually didn’t pick up in popularity in the US until the 70’s when the flower power children took a huge liking to them.  In 1973 the most popular style, the Arizona, was released and the rest is history.  So why did it take me so long to jump on the bandwagon…I’m a total late bloomer 🙂

More Comfortable With Each Wear

The main reason I love Birkenstock sandals are the comfort they offer.  They literally mold to your foot after a couple of wears.  In the summer I prefer to be in sandals, but I also need support for my feet.  Because I live in the city I walk a ton.

I will admit that the most comfortable sandals on Earth do need about 1-2 wears before they are the most comfortable sandals on the planet.  I usually wear them around the house for a day and break them in, then take them on a short outdoor walk and we are ready to roll!

Feminine Touches

My preferred finish on Birkenstock sandals are the metallic finishes they offer.  They soften up the sandals and make them more feminine.  The metallic finishes go with just about everything, from shorts to dresses.  While the leather finishes are nice and hold up over time, they tend to look very masculine and rigid.  New this year are the enlarged buckle options, which I think are super cute and very feminine.  I’m so glad they expanded their options this year.

Cost Per Wear

Birkenstocks range in price, but my Gizeh Sandal run about $100, which I think is a good price to pay for a solid sandal.  Mine typically last 3 years, but I wear mine to death!  I usually get a good 3 years (of summer seasons) out of my sandals.  They are my walking shoes and I walk A LOT.  Round trip to the office is about 3 miles, 5 days a week.  So on average my Birkenstocks can see about 240 miles a year.  And if you do a cost per wear or cost per mile calculation it’s about $0.41 a mile…that’s fantastic!  Bottom line they are 100% worth the cost!

Multiple Styles, But Not Overwhelming

In the land of Birkenstock sandals there are about two styles you can choose from; a thong sandal or a slide.  Once you know which one you like, you just need to narrow down the color options.  I personally have to have a thong sandal, it’s just what I like.  However I’ve been eyeing the slide sandal for sometime now.
