If you’ve been following my blog for a while, you know that I live and work in Chicago. My main form of transportation is my feet! I walk everywhere! My feet are always on time, can speed up when needed and are reliable. My only concern is what shoe to commute in based on the weather that day.
I walk to work no matter what the weather is. So, in the rain, snow and shine I’m walking. While I have certain shoes for certain seasons, in the Spring I can easily wear all of them in one month. That’s Chicago weather for you, one day its 75 and the next it snows. In addition to walking to work I run the majority of my errands by foot. It’s easier to walk in the city then get in the car. Yes, I could take public transportation, but it’s not as reliable as my feet.
Commuting Shoe Requirements
I’ve been commuting by foot to work for almost 20 years. And while that statement dates me, it also makes me an expert in commuting shoes. I also walk about 4 miles round trip to work each day. Over the years my criteria for the ideal commuting shoe have changed, comfort has always been on the top of my list. Here are my main criteria for commuting shoes.
- Comfort
- Durable For Weather Conditions
- Style
While I’m focused on how my shoes look with my outfit, I have decided that I’m not going to find a perfect match for each work outfit. I may be sacrificing my full look on weekdays and I’m ok with that. On the weekends, however I am more focused on my cohesive look and more wiggle room to create a full look with my shoes.
Best Shoes To Commute In
Rothy’s
I have no idea what I did before I discovered Rothy’s. I own 4 pairs and I’m always open to getting another pair. They are super comfortable and come in various classic styles. I love my square toe tuxedo pair and my almond loafer. The best part is that they are machine washable, so they always look fresh and new. You can actually read my full Rothy’s Review here.
Birkenstocks
My summer go to commuting shoes are these Birkenstock sandals. I love the comfort they offer and the larger buckle is super chic. I can usually get two years out of these sandals, which is on the lower side for Birks, but I’m pretty tough on my shoes.
Cloud Gym Shoes
My most worn commuting shoe is the Cloud Sneaker. They are literally like walking on a cloud. I opted for a darker pair since I usually wear black pants. I wear these in the Fall, Winter and Spring.
Everlane Rainboots
You have to have a pair of rainboots in your collection. My preferred style is a short, rubber rainboot with a thick sole. I’ve had this pair for 5 years and they are like brand new still. Sizes are limited in that particular pair, but Hunter has a similar pair that is fully stocked. And if you are a Hunter girlie I have a full Hunter Guide you can read.
Sperry Duck Boots
These boots keep me warm, dry and avoid slipping on ice. They are the perfect commuting shoes for wintery conditions. I get money out these boots too. A pair usually lasts me a couple of winters.
