How To Tie a Hermès Scarf 4 Ways

Truth be told, I don’t have a ton of designer pieces in my closet. I do have a small solid collection of designer pieces that I truly treasure though. My most recent addition is my Hermes silk scarf and it’s a beauty! I love that the Hermes scarf is a classic iconic accessory that will never go out of style. It is something I can pass down to my children. In addition, the scarf is beyond versatile from wearing it in your hair, as a piece of clothing and an accessory. My favorite way to style it is as a scarf.  That’s why I’m sharing how to tie a Hermes scarf 4 different ways.

 

Hermès History 

The iconic Hermès scarf comes from the 150+ year rich history of Hermès. Hermès has been around since 1837 and was founded by Thierry Hermès as a harness workshop in Paris. It was originally intended to serve the needs of European noblemen by providing saddles, bridles and other leather riding gear. As time passed and family members got involved in the business they began to offer more retail items like jackets and satchels for riders, which turned into purses for everyday people.  

 

Hermès arrived in  the US in the 1930’s and in the 1950’s the iconic orange box and carriage and horse logo emerged and stayed around. The most known products produced by Hermes include the Birkin Bag which hit the market in the 80’s, silk scarves which are individually designed by various independent artists and their perfume. Given the high price point of all Hermes items the silk scarf is one of their most popular items as the price point is more attainable. 

 

Another interesting fact about Hermès is that not all products are sold in all stores or online. Each store features items that are curated for their clientele. So something available in Chicago might not be available online or in a New York store. That is what keeps the brand so luxurious and sought after. In other words if you see it, buy it!

 

Hermès Silk Scarf

The Hermès silk scarf comes in a variety of sizes which they label as 20, 45, 70, 90 and 145. These are the dimensions of the scarf and the 90 is the most popular and versatile. Each scarf is handmade and designed by artists featuring imagery that range from military and equestrian to floral. 

 

An Hermès scarf is 100% silk and needs to be cared for delicately. To preserve the scarf you should always store it flat and untied. Furthermore, avoid contact with rain, water or other chemicals and only have a professional dry cleaner clean it when needed.

 

I love the versatility of the scarf from wearing it around your neck to your hair and even wrapping it around your purse. I’m going to share how to tie a Hermes scarf and my favorite ways to style the scarf for the office.

 

Basic Fold

If you are new to scarf tying there is one thing you need to know, it’s the basic building block of scarf tying.  The Pli de Base is the starting point for most ties involving square scarves. It’s an essential skill for any scarf lover to know and master. Here is how you do it.

• Lay your scarf flat so that a corner points toward you
• Fold the top corner two-thirds of the way down the scarf
• Fold the bottom corner two-thirds of the way up the scarf so that the corner lays atop the folded edge (The scarf should look symmetrically folded in thirds)
• Fold the top half of the scarf toward the center, and then the bottom half toward the center.
• Fold the top half on top of the bottom half to complete the Pli de Base
• You should have a long rectangle shaped scarf now

 

The V-Neck Front Tie 

This tie is perfect for button downs and polos, basically anything with a collar.  Here are the steps:

• Fold the scarf into a triangle
• Drape the scarf so the large v in in the front
• Cross the pointy ends around your neck and tie them
• Adjust the length of the scarf as needed

 

The Large Side Knot 

You can wear this with any dress, top or jacket.  However, it is tighter on the neck so it’s best for fall and winter.  Here are the steps:

• Start with the Pli de Base (steps above)
• Take the scarf and wrap it around your neck twice – it might be easiest to put the flat part on the front side of your neck and crossing each side it in the back of your neck, then bring thee ends to the front
• Tie the ends together in the front so they hang long
• Keep the knot in the front or move it to the side

 

The Long Tie

A very easy and basic way to tie any scarf that looks polished.  Here are the steps:

• Start with the Pli de Base (steps above)
• Drap the scarf around your neck with the long side hanging in the front
• Tie both ends together with a little bit of space between your neck and the knot
• It’s that easy!

 

Collier – Knotted Necklace

Need a necklace, but don’t have one?  This tie has you covered.  Here are the steps:

• Start with the Pli de Base (steps above)
• Fold the rectangle in half and tie a knot in this area – you will need to adjust the knot so it’s in the center, both sides hanging down should be an even length
• Tie another knot a couple inches to the left of the first knot, then repeat on the right side
• Place the scarf around your neck and tie the ends together
• You have a gorgeous necklace!
