Hello friends! Is winter ever going to end? I love a good snow storm, but at this point I may have had enough of the cold weather. I’m tired of my winter clothes, especially my scarfs and hats. So it may be time for a refresh or a little pick me up in the winter accessory department.
Besides buying something new, I’ve been trying out different ways to tie my scarf for some variety. I’ve done a little research and wanted to share four different ways to tie a scarf. There are actually so many different ways to tie a scarf, probably more ways than there are scarfs!
Types of Scarfs
There are many different types of scarfs out there. I classify scarfs in the following eight categories. For each scarf type there are at least two different ways to style them. In today’s post I am going to focus on the basic scarf.
Basic Scarf aka an Oblong Scarf
For every scarf type there is a variety of ways to tie them. There are basic ways to tie a scarf and more advanced ways to tie a scarf too. The more loops, knots and twists you add in, the harder it can be. In fact, it can be down right overwhelming. Fear not for I am here to help you tackle the most challenging scarf tying techniques out there with a step by step picture tutorial for each tie type.
How To Tie a Scarf
The Classic Wrap
The easiest way to tie a scarf is the classic wrap. Take the scarf and drape it evenly around your neck, leaving both ends to hang down on each side of your body evenly. Take one side and loop it around your neck loosely. Adjust the whole scarf so both tails are even. Simply fluff the scarf to your desire and voila, you conquered the classic wrap.
The Simple Loop
Take it up a notch with the simple loop. Simply fold the scarf in half lengthwise and create a loop on the one end. Take the scarf and wrap it around your neck. Pull the loose ends through the loop and pull tight. Once around your neck you can adjust the tightness and fluff up the scarf.
The Cowl Neck
Drape the scarf evenly around your neck then loop one end around your neck again. You should have a scarf that looks like the classic wrap now. Make sure the sides are even and tie the two tails together. At this point you will have two loops around your neck. Adjust the loops so the tie loop is closer to your neck and the loose loop hangs over. Fluff up the scarf to your desired look.
The Pretzel
One of my favorite scarf ties is the pretzel. It’s the fancier sister to the simple loop, with a couple more steps. Fold the scarf in half lengthwise and create a loop on the one end. Now place that around your neck and take one of the tails and pull it through the loop. Take the other tail and pull it across the loop (on top of it) and pull it through the loop from the opposite way. Fluff it up to the desired volume you like.
The Celebrity Knot
The celebrity knot is a great style to wear as part of our outfit vs. wearing for warmth. Drape the scarf around your neck, making one end slightly longer than the other. Take the longer side and wrap it around your neck. Then take the end corners of each side and tie them together in a loose knot. Adjust the scarf to your desired position and off you go!
Did you guys learn something new in this post? Maybe you can try it out next weekend. In case you need inspiration for your scarf collection I’ve linked some of my favorite rectangular scarfs right now for you guys.
Side note on my scarves: I have about 30+ scarves, so you can call me scarf hoarder! I can’t get enough scarves in my life. From winter to summer (yes, there is such a thing as a summer scarf), I love to collect them. While most of my scarves are from local retail stores I have a few I adore from my travel to France, Quebec City and New York. Picking up a scarf as a souvenir is a great idea. It’s something you will actually use and a way to remember your trip whenever you wear the scarf.
