How could it be that we are just about on the one-year anniversary of the world being turned upside down? I’ve been working at home full time for almost a year now. On one hand, I can’t believe I survived working from home with a toddler, and on the other hand I’m not shocked I survived. Everyone has the will to survive and thrive, it just needs to come out of you! What everyone doesn’t have is the ability to Zoom (aka video call) successfully.
That is why today I’m sharing my 5 tips for Zoom meetings so you can be ready for all your calls. Being on Zoom is an everyday part of my job and being ready at all times is key. I get fully dressed and do my hair and makeup everyday, even though I’m working from home. Partly because I need to be professional looking in a minute’s notice and partially because it makes me want to be productive. Loungewear is fun, but it makes me feel relaxed and not too motivated.
5 Tips for Zoom Meetings
Power Shirt
Dress to impress…from the waist up! On a video call the other participants only see from your waist up, so focus your efforts there. I like to pick a top that pops and have great details. Puff sleeves are a huge focus for me, it’s my power sleeve. I’m also a fan of exaggerated bows or neck ties. I loved them in the office and out of the office. I’m wearing this top in a large.
Audio Check
There is nothing worse than bad audio on a video call, in fact it’s huge pet peeve of mine. If you are using your cell phone (who isn’t these days), be sure you have good reception where you are. I know for me there are certain spots in my condo where my phone doesn’t work, so I’m never in them for a call. If you are using airpods make sure they are charged. And always have a backup close by in case your airpods die.
Computer Placement
If you are working on a laptop have your computer on a flat surface that is closely placed at eye level. I often have to type when on calls and having my computer on a stable surface makes a huge difference. If the surface is not stable your computer will shake around when typing and make the other participants a little nauseous. Also check your camera placement before you get on video. Positioning it perfectly before you jump on the call will save any embarrassments on the call.
Lighting
Lighting is key, even on a work video call. I personally don’t always have the best lighting, but Zoom helps you out with that. This tip will change your life! When in Zoom, click the arrow next to the video button, in this menu you can change your lighting. Select “adjust for low light” and turn it to auto, this will adjust your lighting when you can’t. Next select “touch up my appearance”, this is a special filter and makes you glow and look smooth. I keep mine in the middle for the perfect look
Appearance
Looking put together on video is a great way to make a great impression. I recently started doing these things and feel that it’s upped my Zoom game.
- Lipstick – Sounds sexist, but it’s true. Throw some lipstick on, it instantly changes your appearance and brightens up your face.
- Tula Rose and Glow – I put on my Rose and Glow right before a video call and it wakes up my eyes. Zoom fatigue is a real thing and this is my secret weapon to combat it physically.
- Painted Nails – I talk with my hands and they are seen on every Zoom call. Painted nails make you look put together. And I’m obsessed with my at home Mani System from Olive & June so having fresh nails is fun to do now. You can read my full review here.
